Scotland's Sporting Chance: a manifesto for sport in Scotland was launched on February 2nd 2010 by the Scottish Sports Alliance.
The Alliance represents the collective voice of nearly 1 million sports participants across the whole of Scotland, representing roughly one fifth of the entire population. As the collective voice of sport the Alliance comprises of the Scottish Sports Association, Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils and Scottish Universities Sport.
The manifesto, the first of its kind in Scotland, is designed to support and inform all political parties in Scotland as they themselves begin to build their own manifestos for the 2011 Scottish Parliamentary elections.
2011 will be an important landmark for Scotland, not only will it launch an exciting three years of international competition in the UK, it will also see the election of the ruling party in the build up of and during the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The Government is vital to the success of addressing issues facing sport in Scotland and is crucial in keeping these issues on the national political agenda. We believe that Sport has a major role to play in all areas of life in Scotland and through its promotion at a national level changes can be made for the betterment of the nation as a whole.
Sport generates important values such as team spirit, solidarity, tolerance and fair play, contributing to personal development and fulfilment. It promotes the active contribution of citizens to society and thereby helps foster active citizenship.
At a time when many citizens are not reaching recommended physical activity levels and when people in Scotland suffer directly due to their inactivity it is imperative that we seek to promote sport and physical activity on the political agenda. Participation in sport boosts both mental and physical wellbeing and its inclusion and promotion across the national agenda will benefit Scotland for many years to come.
The purpose of the manifesto is to raise awareness to the collective issues of sport in Scotland, which not only effects the one fifth of the population which participates but more importantly offers the whole of the population a chance to make changes and improve lifestyles. By delivering on these issues highlighted Scotland has a chance to become a fitter, healthier nation; with stronger communities; and build a stronger economy.
This manifesto was submitted to all political parties in Scotland and is intended to inform and support the creation of their individual manifestos for the 2011 Scottish Parliamentary elections.
